Rhizomatous Tall Fescue (RTF©) is an advanced
generation of turf-type tall fescue which produces rhizomes. A rhizome is an
underground stem that penetrates laterally through the soil to spread the plant.
Rhizomes send shoots up to the soil surface while extending new roots downward,
forming a new plant. The rhizomatous nature of RTF is similar to Kentucky
bluegrass. However, unlike Kentucky bluegrass RTF will survive the transition
zone climate and other tall fescue turf regions.
“The advantages to this new sod are numerous” says
Michelle Harvey, one of the owners of Lakeview Nurseries. “It’s ability to
quickly fill in damaged spots gives it an incredible high traffic tolerance.”
Michelle adds.
With a stronger, deeper root system than traditional
sod, RTF is considerably more drought tolerant. “Another big advantage over
Kentucky bluegrass sod is RTF’s ability to thrive in sun or shade” Michelle
says. She adds that “RTF is one of the most shade tolerant of grasses and it
will not brown out in strong summer sun”.
Why introduce a new type of sod? “RTF is a “greener”
and more environmentally friendly sod than bluegrass” Michelle answers.
“Introducing RTF to our customers is part our continuing effort to offer
customers “greener” choices for their gardens and landscapes, Lakeview
Nurseries, one of the countries first garden centers to use solar power as an
alternative energy source announced the arrival of an all organic season long
lawn care program. “RTF has excellent insect and disease resistance so it will
require less chemical and fertilizer input” says Michelle.
“Just like our Kentucky bluegrass sod, our RTF sod
is grown right here in Massachusetts” Michelle says. RTF is currently available
for order at both the Lunenburg and Winchendon stores.
